Identifying Scientific Primary Source Articles

  Focus on original research, scientific experiments, and findings published in academic or scholarly journals.  

  Primary source articles are the first publication of a research study and are written by the scholars who conducted the research.

  Articles include these sections:

         Abstract -- a summary of the artilce that explains what the researchers did and their major findings

         Introduction -- puts the research in context 

         Methods, Materials -- What the researchers did and how they did it

         Results -- what did the research create -- look for charts and graphs in this section

         Discussion -- Explains the significance of the research, draws conclusions and makes suggestions for follow-up research

  Clues for identifying Primary Source Articles include multiple authors, scientific language, length, scholarly publication, format, and reference list.
